Dokk1 Aarhus

Dokk1 was designed by Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects. It is Scandinavia's largest public library and part of the Urban Mediaspace project, the Municipality of Aarhus' biggest construction project ever. The objective is to convert Aarhus’ previous industrial/ferry harbour into an open, living cityspace inside and out. The top floors of the building will house administrative offices. The glass building below will be transparent, 360 degrees in all directions, so all activities that go on inside the building can be seen from outside, while people inside the building will be able to see the sea, harbour, forest and city from inside.

Glass and movable walls, integrated in the building's architecture

DEKO delivered and installed the glass walls and movable partition walls for this unique architecture. The architect wanted 360 degrees of transparency around the building, but there were also strict requirements for sound and fire safety. There were literally no products of that size and design on the market at the time that could satisfy those requirements. DEKO had to innovate and adapt our standard products to the project and develop special joints for firewalls in new sizes that would meet national requirements to fire, acoustics and safety, as well as developing profiles specifically for this project.

DEKO FG Fire, fire-rated fully glazed walls

To meet fire standard we took our point of departure in our standard FG Fire fully glazed walls and used thin aluminium profiles that we managed to design and implement for this project to avoid using our standard profiles between the glass sheets. Instead, we managed to develop a method of vertical jointing between the unique, continuous sheets of glass that this project demanded. Some sheets were as big as 1.5 x 3.0 meters, which no other company had managed to produce and deliver as a fire-rated and approved system.

DEKO FG Silent fully glazed walls, with high acoustic reduction

Fire safety was not the only requirement we faced for this glass. We also had to make walls with excellent acoustic reduction properties with vertical joints and thin aluminium profiles along the edge. We applied the DEKO FG Silent fully glazed wall concept to glass with acoustic reduction of up to 50 dB in very large sizes and an appurtenant door system. This allowed us to provide glass walls that sent daylight into the entire building while keeping sound levels low enough to create a comfortable acoustic environment.

DEKO delivered 2500m² of glass walls and 150 glass doors from our FG, FG Silent and FG Fire series – all in the same thin-profile design.

DEKO MV movable walls

Our department at Pandrup was also able to deliver and install flexible DEKO MV movable walls in acoustic class 59 dB with Class 1 sheets and surfaces in high-pressure laminate and real birch veneer surfacing. We also installed DEKO MV Glass full glazed movable walls in the cafe area. We managed to meet the acoustic and fire requirements and the client's desire for transparency without compromising on surfaces, flexibility or stacking options.
