Creative and inventive use of building materials in the new KAB-Hus

The KAB-Hus was designed with a vision of being a sustainable home with high-quality architecture and high-quality materials that uses wood as a core element throughout. That’s why Wallmakers provided the project with tailor-made glazed partition solutions and doors produced from excess pine timber collected from the furniture industry.

Glazed partitions and doors made from excess and waste timber collected from the furniture industry

Situated at Enghavevej 81, Copenhagen, the KAB-Hus was built with sustainability in mind at every turn in order to make it stand out as a shining example of the solutions that construction company KAB employs in its residential developments. While each solution has been carefully selected with a view to economic, social and environmental sustainability, such as by using upcycled building materials, the home is also meant to give occupants a feeling of quality in terms of its architecture.

Wood has been used as the primary element to furnish the house, and its warmth and its calming effect permeate every inch of the environment, giving occupants a sense of wellbeing. In order to match these furnishings and also the high demands placed on sustainability, Wallmakers has upcycled and converted excess pine timber from the furniture industry into unique door and partition solutions with an authentic, Nordic look.

Wallmakers has also provided fire- and sound-rated glazed partitions as well as double doors made from the same type of wood in order to maintain a consistent design and also to satisfy the high fire resistance and sound reduction requirements for the building’s atrium.

A conversation that turned into an inspirational idea

The idea behind the upcycled door and glazed wall solutions supplied for the KAB-Hus actually came about back in 2018 when Wallmakers took part in the Building Green trade fair at the Forum expo centre. As a sustainable supplier, we take sustainability very seriously and over the past 12 years we have integrated this idea into our product development process, so the Building Green trade fair seemed like an obvious platform for talking to other specialists and stakeholders from the construction industry.

The one conversation that proved particularly inspirational occurred when visionary architects from Henning Larsen Architects paid a visit to our stand and we began to discuss the KAB-Hus project, that was still in its very early stages at that time. That conversation turned into an inspirational idea about upcycled timber products, and afterwards Wallmakers and HLA began to work closely on a detailed project plan for the KAB-Hus.

It was an exciting process that provided plenty of challenges in terms of dimensions, designs and function that were resolved to our great satisfaction. It was a real joy working with Henning Larsen Architects whose safe hands have set new standards for Nordic and sustainable architecture.
